Charles "Fred" Russell, 72, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009, at his home.
Fred was a member of the Evansville Fire Department for 26 years before his retirement. He was a 1955 graduate of Reitz High School where he was an all-state football player in 1954. He loved to watch sports, especially IU and was a member of the River Bend Association, R-Men's Club and Hilltop Grove.
Surviving Fred are his wife, Barbara Russell; children, Fred Russell of Henderson, Ky., Becky Schimmell and her husband, David, of Evansville, Tom Russell and his wife, Kelle, of Evansville, Jeff Russell and wife, Julia, of Stevensville, Mich.; grandchildren, Rusty and Todd Schimmell, Rob, Ryan and Justin Russell and Jessica and Taylor Russell; great-grandchildren, Alison, Luke and Jenna Schimmell; sisters, Clara Cross and Betty Merkel, of Evansville; and brothers, Frank Russell of Kirkwood, Mo., and Jim Russell of Jacksonville, Fla. Also surviving are stepchildren, Lisa Wolfe and her husband, Larry, of Arizona, Lori Briles and husband, Maynard, of Evansville [/color] and Steve Sartore and his wife, Angela, of Tennessee; and stepgrandchildren, Steven Black, Noah, Abe, Jonah and Sam Sartore.
Fred was preceded in death by his first wife, Susie Russell, sister, Lucille Wessell and brothers, Robert Russell Jr. and Bill Russell.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 14, 2009, at Pierre Funeral Home, Evansville Fire Department Chaplain John Lefler officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service conducted by Sr. Jenny Miller at 6 p.m.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to VNA Hospice, Dr. Anthony Stephens and Dr. Anthony Inzerello and their staffs for the care and concern shown to Fred during his illness.
